First of all, it’s impossible to run switches in GNS3! That being said the option that we do have is using the NM-16SW switching module in a router which gives us some capabilities. IOS images are lower in cpu and memory so you can fit more of them in one topology. R+Svms are all vendor Routing and Switching images that are larger in size but can be imported into GNS3 for real world network emulation. I don't think there is ios 15 for 3550. similar routers, there is a ios 15 code released for 2811s. just need more RAM and flash to support it. however, at ccan level one does not really need ios 15, 12.4T will do as long there is support for IPv6 .
